Roatan, Honduras — Carnival Corporation, the world’s largest cruise operator, has officially expanded its global prepared meal donation program into Latin America — and Roatan is one of the first islands to benefit.
The initiative, part of Carnival’s Less Left Over sustainability strategy, redirects surplus prepared but unserved meals from its cruise ships to local communities facing food insecurity. Meals are collected directly from ships docking on the island and distributed to families through local partners.

The new partnership was formalized between Carnival Corporation and Mayor of Roatan, marking an important milestone for the island. For years, cruise tourism has been a central part of Roatan’s economy, but the direct community benefit beyond tourism spending has often been limited. This initiative changes that — turning surplus food into a valuable resource for residents in need.
According to Vicky Rey, Carnival’s vice president of government affairs for Latin America, the expansion reflects the company’s long-term commitment to the communities that welcome its vessels. She noted that the program provides “nutritious, ready-to-eat meals to families and children who might otherwise go without,” adding that the collaboration of local leaders has been key in making the project possible.

For Roatan, this partnership not only addresses food insecurity but also strengthens the island’s relationship with one of its most significant economic partners. The program demonstrates how cruise tourism can generate tangible social impact, aligning with local efforts to promote sustainability and community welfare.
Originally launched in 2017 under the Costa Cruises brand, Carnival’s donation initiative now operates in 19 destinations worldwide and has contributed more than 300,000 meals to date. With the inclusion of Mexico, Honduras, and the Dominican Republic, the company expands its reach while reinforcing its commitment to both environmental responsibility and social good.
As Carnival ships continue to dock in Mahogany Bay and Coxen Hole, the partnership ensures that the benefits of tourism extend beyond the ports — reaching the island’s neighborhoods and families that need it most.
