Honduran Linguist Presents Research on Bay Islands English at International Symposium in the United Kingdom

In January 2026, Renee Midence attended the Bilingualism in the Hispanic and Lusophone World conference, held from January 12 to January 14 at the University of Reading in the United Kingdom. This biennial academic event brings together researchers working on bilingualism and multilingualism across Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking contexts, including sociolinguistics, language contact, heritage languages, language acquisition, and related theoretical issues.

Renee participated as a speaker and presented her research on Bay Islands English, the English variety historically spoken in the Bay Islands of Honduras. Her presentation was part of the symposium’s scientific program, which included oral talks and poster sessions addressing different aspects of multilingualism in the Hispanic and Lusophone worlds.

At the conference, Renee also shared a poster summarizing her methodology and key findings alongside her oral contribution. She was photographed with her supervising professor and colleagues, and wore her official conference name tag during the event.

Renee is currently pursuing a master’s degree in Linguistics, Literary, and Cultural Studies at the University of Seville. She plans to continue working on Bay Islands English as the focus of her master’s dissertation. Originally from Honduras with family roots in Roatan, she chose this topic due to its cultural and linguistic significance within her own community.
